sound of my voice

Can I just say that I think I'm going to start obsessing over independent films pretty soon here?!
I went to the movie theatre in Scottsdale that only shows independent films with Paige the other day, and we saw this movie called "Sound of My Voice."  I had pretty high expectations after watching the trailer, and the movie definitely surpassed them!

I'm also loving the story behind Brit Marling: the lead actress, writer, and producer of the film.  28 years old, the valedictorian of her Georgetown University class, a degree in Economics, a job offer at Goldman Sachs in New York....AND after all of that, she decided to move to Los Angeles to become an artist.  After being cast in "the pretty blonde" roles, she realized that in order to play the roles that she wanted to play, she would just have to write them herself.  So, that's what she did!  She wrote the movie we saw and "Another Earth" at the same time...and they are both doing very well in the independent film community! I can't wait to see what she does next.

As for the film, I don't want to give too much away, but I can say that it was filmed in a way that gives the audience the same emotions and feelings as the two main characters...even up until the end where your thoughts about the ending teach you whether or not you are a believer like or unlike the rest of the characters.  This probably sounds so foreign to you, but please watch the trailer below and let me know what you think!!

someone like you

I absolutely love covers.
Especially those songs that make you think about happy times, sad times, or almost-forgotten times.
The latest is a cover of Adele's Someone Like You.
Just listen to the lyrics--and try telling me you've never felt that way.
Just listen to the lyrics--and reflect on all of the good times and the bad.
Just listen to the lyrics--and realize that you will find someone out there.
It's not about finding love.  It's about letting love find you.

it's never too late

"For what it's worth: it's never to late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be.
There's no time limit, stop whenever you want.
You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing.
We can make the best or the worst of it.
I hope you make the best of it.
And I hope you see things that startle you.
I hope you feel things you never felt before.
I hope you meet people with a different point of view.
I hope you live a life you're proud of.
If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."

your assistance please...

Okay, so I need your help.

My friend, Elliott, lives in California and I live in Arizona.  The other day we found a cool feature on Skype where you can share a screen...which makes it super easy to watch movies together (but separate at the same time haha).

We want to watch more that neither of us have seen (we watched Casablanca last time), and I need ideas on movies that you all really like!!  Try and leave out the "chick flicks" since I'd be the only one enjoying it haha.

Thank you for your help!!! :)

the painted veil

Has anyone ever seen "The Painted Veil" with Naomi Watts and Edward Norton?  I hadn't even heard of it until I went searching for the origin of a quote I found on tumblr.

"Il y a longtemps que je t'aime, jamais je ne t'oublirai"
or, in English,
"I've loved you for a long time, never will I forget you."

It's a beautiful song lyric, in a beautiful language.  Just imagine hearing those words coming from the voice of the person you love.

hello again lovelies

Wowww.  It has been WAY too long since my last post.  If I were you guys I would have thought that I disappeared when the new year came!  But I'm back :)

My NYE wasn't spent at some extravagant party toasting with champagne and dancing until I had to kick my heels off.  Instead, I was at home with Kelcy and Paige, packing for our early morning flight to Kauai with my Mom and Dad!  We did have a toast, champagne thanks to Joel (Paige's BF), and a mini dance party.  Then we hit the hay, woke up at 5 in the early morning, and made our way to the airport.
Kauai was amazing!!  It was so much different from the other islands, but it was so lush and beautiful.  In fact, it was kind of chilly some days! Here are some pictures from the trip, and now you can see what I've been up to for the past ten days.
hat shopping in hanalei haha
Giving Kel a piggy back ride :)
horseback riding!
Kel and Paige with the coffee beans
The mini-plane we got to ride in!
(from the plane)
Where a scene in
Tropic Thunder was filmed!!
The part where Ben Stiller was a captive.
We got to talk into cool headsets
A HUUUUGE cave

Thanks Mom and Dad for the trip :))
It was so great to spend ten days with the parents and Paige since I don't get to see either that much when we're all back in Arizona.

Now I've got a day to do laundry, unpack, and then repack for my trip to California with Mom and Kel!!

we should see other people

I can't believe I didn't blog about the following story right after it happened, it was that amazing haha.

So I go into independent film class and sit down in a new row (one up from where I normally sit).  I put my bag on the seat next to me to save my friend Morgan's seat since she bbmed me saying she was going to be a little late.  Then, to my right, this eccentric boy comes over and starts talking to me about the extra credit assignment, my major, blah blah blah.  Then we shake hands and tell each other our names.  His was Aaron.  Mine is Brooke as all of you know.

Then a boy to my left, with eyes I hadn't noticed before (they're like the color of honey), starts talking to me about...what do you know?...the extra credit.  And then blackout...the movie starts.  For the first half of the movie I was wondering: why in a class that's been going on for 14 weeks, did people finally start talking to me?  Was it because I borrowed Kelcy's blazer?  Was it the way my skinny jeans met my Vans boat shoes?  Was it my white v-neck?  Or maybe the Cheez-Its and chocolate chip cookies poking out of my bag?  Anyway, that's not even the point of this story.

The movie ends.  The note-taking is complete.  Class is dismissed.  And Aaron's standing up and faced towards me.  He says, and I quote:  "Well Brooke, it was fun, but I think we should see other people."  And that was that.  I couldn't do anything but laugh.  And it definitely made my day.

mmm delights

Today has been an absolutely perfect day <3

I woke up for my communications class this morning and realized that my printer didn't have ink to print an assignment I needed by three...so I decided to skip com and head on over to target.  When I got home from my errands, I went to Essence Bakery with Kelcy and had a delicious grilled cheese (good bread, mozzarella cheese, fresh tomato, and organic basil) and a chocolate croissant.  Olivia met us there, and then we got in the car and went to Olivia's old apartment complex to lay out in the beautiful 88 degree weather for a couple of hours.

amazing grilled cheese & potato salad
I had to go to school after that, but when Kelcy came to switch the car with me, she surprised me with a pumpkin frappuccino from Starbucks!!! <3 Such an amazing surprise!  I'd never had one before...and I can now say that I will be getting one everytime I go to Starbucks as long as they're in season.
thank you kelky!! <3 <3 <3

Half way through the day, I got my daily horoscope from the newspaper: "Time flies when you're having fun, so you will want to enjoy every minute today."  --Which I am :)

Tonight will be incredible too.  Possible Chipotle date with Kelcy (I'm jealous because Olivia got Chipotle after the pool!) after she gets out of class...and Due Date at midnight with the best friends and their boyfriends <3 [Olivia's my date tonight haha]

guilty pleasures

My friend Kristen did this "blog assignment" over summer and I'll be doing it over the next few months too :)

Day 1: Guilty Pleasures

Gossip Girl...for many reasons.
1) The beautiful boys.
2) The classy girls I wish I could be (Serena in particular)
3) It means hanging out with my amigas every Monday night.

Pretty Little Liars

It's not in season right now...in fact they just had a crazy cliffhanger which is one of the main reasons I can't wait for January.
It's a high school, less upper-class, version of Gossip Girl.  And it makes me wish I went to an ordinary high school all the more.

Twilight

I remember reading the first book and absolutely melting.  The books are obviously going to be better than the movies, but I'm definitely not saying no to watching Kellan Lutz, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, and that new vampire (Riley) on a big screen.

Facebook...

Who isn't addicted?  I mean we think it's weird when someone doesn't have a facebook.  But, it's definitely my ultimate guilty pleasure.  When I wake up, multiple times throughout the day, on my phone, before I go to bed--I have to check my facebook.

What are some of your guilty pleasures?? Maybe I'll want to make them mine as well :)

samuel elliott

So after the last few episodes of Gossip Girl...I definitely have a new "gg boy" crush <3  In the show he's a professor at Columbia, and in real life he's a 34 year old [a bit old for me, but who cares? ;) ] actor named Samuel Page.  His birth name, however, is Samuel Elliott, which is way dreamier, I think.

After doing a little research on him, I found out that he's actually smart in real life--which makes him all the more perfect.  He graduated from Princeton University and had his senior thesis published in a science journal.  Oh...and he's from Wisconsin.  So he was probably raised well and is nice and family-oriented.

My perfect man: handsome, sweet, funny, smart, classy, driven.
[or anyone like Samuel Elliott for that matter]

greatest weakness

I ran across this quote a few weeks ago that I really agree with.  I was shocked to see who said it, but yet it's so true.

chuck bass

<3 <3 <3

p.s. i took blaire's spot in my dream

I can't wait for Gossip Girl night at Olivia's <3  That one week break was a bit too long for me without some Upper East Side drama.  Hopefully in this episode Chuck and Blaire trend towards becoming more like lovers and less like enemies.

I'm excited for an hour of television fun with my girls while eating our free scoops of baskin robbins <3  oh...and i'll just be fantasizing about Ed Westwick the entire time (considering I had an amazing dream the other night in which we dated).

library time

Usually on my three hour breaks on Tuesdays and Thursdays I come to the quiet basement of the library to focus on studying and doing necessary homework.  Today, however, I surprisingly have nothing that needs to get done!!  So...I'm using the time to have a mini movie marathon by myself with my headphones on <3
haha i felt a little silly doing photobooth in the library.
&& notice the matching grey sweater and grey nails :)

dying breath

I love me some Regina Spektor in the morning, when I'm feeling bummed, or whenever I feel like singing with an accent (haha).

"This is how it works:
You're young until you're not.
You love until you don't.
You try until you can't.
You laugh until you cry.
You cry until you laugh.
And everyone must breathe,
Until their dying breath.

pearl harbor

Something about the storm outside and the changing weather makes me want to curl up in a blanket in a dark room and have a movie marathon. For awhile now, I've been wanting to see Pearl Harbor.  I wanted to see it when it came out, when people raved about it months after it was out of theatres, and mostly after we visited the Pearl Harbor Memorial, museum, and site in Hawaii last January.  I told myself on that trip that I'd watch the movie right when I got home....but it's already October and I have yet to watch it.

ummm...yummm?
This weekend, I will watch it.  I have to now that it's set in stone on this blog.  I'm excited, not only to see the gorgeous Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett in handsome uniforms, but to see the stories that I read about in the museum come alive onto the screen.
